Virtual Field Trips

There are many things to learn within the power plants at TVA, from history to environmental care. They offer much more than just power production.

Taking a virtual field trip of one, or multiple, TVA power plants is a great idea for anyone who wants to learn more about power, history, and other important parts of the Tennessee Valley.

Tour a Dam

TVA produces power through many different means, one of which is hydroelectric power. Hydroelectric power is the use of falling water to produce electricity. TVA uses dams across different rivers in the valley to produce this power.

TVA has 29 hydroelectric dams as well as one pumped-storage power plant. Join us as we tour a few of these!

Fontana Dam

Fontana Dam is located in the Great Smoky Mountains of western North Carolina. Standing 480 feet high, Fontana is not only TVA's tallest dam, but the tallest dam east of the Rocky Mountains!

Guntersville Dam

Guntersville Dam is located on the Tennessee River in North Alabama. This dam, constructed from 1935 to 1939, was the fourth one built by TVA. It is one of the best lakes in the country to catch a bass!

Kentucky Dam

Kentucky Dam is located on the Tennessee River, only 22 miles from where the Tennessee and Ohio rivers meet. Stretching 1.5 miles across the river, this dam is TVA's longest!

Norris Dam

Norris Dam is located on the Clinch River, just north of Knoxville, Tenn. Started in 1933, it was the first dam ever built by TVA. It is a popular place to fish, boat, swim, bike and hike!
