Tellico Reservoir Land Management Plan

Update September 2, 2022

On August 26, 2022, the TVA Chief Executive Officer selected Alternative B as the approved Final Tellico Reservoir Land Management Plan, updating approximately 16.5% of the allocations on Tellico Reservoir. 

Reservoir Land Management Plans (RLMPs) effectively guide land use approvals, private water use facility permitting, and resource management decisions on TVA-managed public land. A revision to the Tellico RLMP was approved by the TVA Chief Executive Officer in August 2022.

Tellico Reservoir is an impoundment of the Little Tennessee River formed by Tellico Dam, which is located at Little Tennessee River mile 0.4. Tellico Reservoir is situated in Loudon, Blount, and Monroe Counties in east Tennessee.

Tellico Dam was the last dam built by TVA on the Tennessee River. A canal diverts water into Fort Loudoun Lake to help with flood control, increased power production and navigation. Tellico Reservoir is home to the East Lakeshore Trail, designated a National Recreation Trail by the Department of the Interior, and the Hall Bend Habitat Protection Area Trail – a 5-mile, moderate trail featuring scenic views, fishing spots and wildlife viewing.

Scope

The scope of the 2000 Tellico RLMP is 12,787.6 acres of TVA public land and the reservoir property is divided into 168 parcels. TVA’s Final RLMP revision includes an overview of TVA’s planning process, a description of Tellico Reservoir, and descriptions of each individual TVA parcel. Each parcel is assigned a single land use allocation zone. Descriptions of the allowable land use within each land planning zone are available here.

The Final RLMP revision is consistent with the TVA Land Policy,  Natural Resource Plan (NRP), Comprehensive Valleywide Land Plan (CVLP), and TVA’s goals for managing natural resources on public lands. RLMPs guide land use approvals, private water-use facility permitting, and resource management decisions on TVA-managed public land.

Allocation Changes

After approval of an RLMP by TVA, all future uses of TVA public lands on that reservoir must then be consistent with the allocations within the RLMP. In accordance with TVA policies and guidelines, allocation changes are only allowable under limited circumstances. The attachment at the link below describes the land use allocation changes that have occurred on Tellico Reservoir since the 2022 RLMP was completed.
