Remember not so long ago when the Memphis area had some of the coldest temperatures in years? It seems a long way off now! The Mid-South region is seeing some of the warmest temperatures of the year, and the demand for TVA power is as high as we’ve seen since 2012. The one thing that is constant – TVA is ready to meet the demand and keep the power on!

This is something we plan for – TVA continually monitors weather forecasts, has processes in place to adjust generation and transmission resources to meet expected demand, and continues to invest in further strengthening the resiliency of our system.

Just like we did back in February, TVA is using all our available assets in our diverse generation fleet – the nation’s third largest – for maximum flexibility to provide energy from many different sources. That includes one of the most efficient natural gas plants in the country here at the Allen Combined Cycle plant in Memphis. Learn more about our power system at tva.com/annualreport.

TVA’s transmission system is interconnected to a broader regional energy system that allows us to purchase additional power in times of unusually high demand.

For this current weather event, we’ve already taken steps to strengthen the resiliency of our generation and transmission system, and we will take others, as needed, to keep lights on. 

Our priority is to maintain the reliability of the power system to help ensure public safety and comfort.

TVA and local power companies are taking steps to reduce our own power needs, and we encourage others to do the same.

You can help keep your own power bill under control – and ensure there is plenty of power available for everyone – by taking some steps today to lower your electricity use while still staying cool.

During the hottest part of the day between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m., you can turn your thermostat up – even one degree makes a difference – and avoid any unnecessary power use.

• Wash your dishes and clothes in the morning or later at night
• Turn off lights and unneeded electrical items
• Use fans to move air – they use far less power than your AC!
• Keep the blinds on the sunny side of your house closed – no need to deal with more unnecessary heat!
