Traffic Caution in Knoxville for I-40, Highway 11E and the Holston River

Jan 19, 2021

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Tennessee Valley Authority has issued a traffic caution for transmission line work on the Knox-Douglas 161 kilovolt transmission line. Workers will replace conductors for continued reliability with work beginning at 9 a.m. and concluding at dark.

Traffic will be reduced during work hours to one lane on Jan. 24 and Jan. 31 where the line crosses I-40 at mile marker 395. On Highway 11E, on the west side of the 11E/70 split, lane closures can be expected during work hours on Jan. 25 and Feb. 1. Work is coordinated with the Tennessee Department of Transportation. Travelers should use TDOT SmartWay and pay attention to overhead signs and roadside message boards for up-to-date traffic information.

On Jan. 20, there will be transmission line work across the Holston River where the line crosses north of Armstrong Island, adjacent to I-40. Helicopter support will be used for the work on the TVA transmission line during daylight hours.

Watercraft operators should avoid the area or take extra precautions. Everyone in the area should heed warnings of the safety patrol boats and personnel that will be on patrol in the area. Marine channels 13, 16 and 81 will be monitored by the safety boats.

TVA is investing over $2 billion in transmission system improvements across our service area between 2021 and 2025 to build the energy grid of the future that will continue to provide, clean, low cost, reliable power.
